Cunard Capsule Cruise Collection
The limited-edition styling service marks two key centenaries – the first is to celebrate 100 years since cruise collections became part of the coveted fashion scene. The second is the 100-year anniversary of the first ever round the world cruise on Cunard’s ship, Laconia.
The cruise collection has been curated by Bay and Circle of Style and draws inspiration from the rich legacy of cruise couture fashion that has evolved since the 1900s.

In the cruise collection lookbook below, we’ve selected a range of historical and modern-day cruise looks, shown side-by-side, to show how after 100-years, the decades of cruising couture have come full circle.

10 years of cruising couture
Pioneer of second-hand fashion, Bay Garnett, delves into the Cunard archives to find inspiration for the new collection.
I love the projection of self respect and dignity that the original image exudes. We’ve tried to emulate this with a classic intricate jacket (that I LOVE) and is a mix of gothic romanticism with a dash of Edwardiana thrown in with thick, quality fabrics, which helps to elevate the simple look by bringing in a bit of structure in the shoulders to add some modern sophistication.

This look is all about the coat and that’s exactly what we went for in our modern look. A double breasted, wide shoulder mannish style coat is hard to beat and is always a timeless classic. It goes with everything and anything. Paired with some simple black trousers and boots, you’re set for a winter cruise.

While this image is from the 20s, the look is so modern we really didn’t need to change much when recreating it for today’s audiences - with a pleated skirt and white sneakers, you’re already in 2023 and it just goes to show how fashion trends really do come full circle. Smart, monochrome and Coco Chanel in spirit.

The 1930s could not be richer stylistically! This was one of the decade looks that I was most looking forward to recreating. The revolutionary bias cut made its debut in this era, so we couldn’t look past a classic replica that’s still very much in style today.

The 1940s is all about glamor - think gold lamé and leopard print throws, and of course movie stars! The modern look had to be focused on evening wear, recreating the off-shoulder Hollywood-esque dress that makes one feel like a modern day Olivia de Havilland.

You can just feel the sugary romance in this image from the 50s. It’s the innocence and hope that radiates from the fashion choices that we wanted to pull into the modern look. For this, we took a classic 50s silhouette but with a bold color to exude a modern confidence.

Simple, chic and elegant is the look of the 60s. We recreated this look almost exactly but added a classic cat-eye and a touch of animal print. Something that could easily be worn to a day on the deck or more casual evening dinner.

You can tell this image is from the 70’s just by the bold prints and colors. It was an ‘anything goes era’ and we really wanted to bring this spirit into the modern look. For this look we really tuned into the yellowy/gold tones of the 70’s but with a touch of metallic.

I think there is a reason one of the biggest brands from the 80s is called ‘Esprit’ meaning ‘Spirit’ and you can see it coming through in the archive image. For this look, we wanted to bring through the nautical colors and then the most 80s thing of all (the devil is always in the detail) the perfect white 80s ankle sock.

People began to take sportswear to a new level in the 90s which you can really see in the archive image. While it’s made a comeback with the younger generation today, for the modern look, we’ve pared this back into a more wearable day-time-look - perfect for some deck games.

To create the modern capsule collection, we worked with Bay to style and shoot 10 cruise looks, using pre-loved clothing that has been inspired by each decade. The collection was created to give our customers inspiration for their next cruise – drawing on the key stylistic themes of each decade throughout the twentieth century - and importantly, showing how to create a cruisewear wardrobe that is fresh and sustainable.
