Solar eclipse cruises with Cunard

We take a look at some special 2026 itineraries that include a spectacular phenomenon - the total solar eclipse. See where you could be with Cunard - on board and ashore - on this very special day.

On August 12, 2026, parts of North America and Europe will experience a rare phenomenon; a total solar eclipse. In the middle of the day, when the summer sun is high, the moon will move in a curved path between the sun and Earth, temporarily blocking all light and causing a momentary illusion of night.

For Cunard guests, three of our ships will be positioned in the eclipse pathway at just the right time to - weather permitting - provide a brilliant view of this rare sight in a uniquely Cunard way.

Will you be swimming on your back in the Pavilion pool as you gaze up in wonder? Will you be sitting at the upper deck bar, with a perfectly chilled cocktail in hand? Or will you be on shore, walking the streets of an exciting new destination with your loved ones, or watching on from a local viewpoint?

Queen Mary 2 - Norway and Iceland (M618)

Our famous flagship will be heading north in summer 2026 on this 14-night adventure. Escape the summer heat for milder climes and treasure sailing through the tranquil fjords of Norway, before crossing the North Sea to Iceland. After all your exploring, relax for the last leg of your voyage: a Transatlantic Crossing to New York.

On August 12, when the solar eclipse is expected, Queen Mary 2 will be visiting Reykjavik, Iceland's capital city for an overnight call. The eclipse is due to occur late afternoon local time. Whether you're trying delicious Icelandic seafood, enjoying a signature Afternoon Tea on board, or returning on board from a memorable Shore Experience, this is sure to be an unforgettable setting for the eclipse. What's more, as Queen Mary 2 will be staying in Reykjavik overnight, you get ample time to explore the city's best spots and experiences by day and by night.

Queen Anne - Spain and France (H620)

If you prefer the warmer climes of the south, you can depart from Southampton for a 7-night roundtrip voyage to visit Spanish and French ports of call on our newest ship: Queen Anne. Sail south to three beautiful Spanish ports, then stop in at Pauillac, nestled within the Bay of Biscay, before returning to Southampton in style.

When the moon moves across the sun, you could be on Queen Anne, departing the sunny Spanish port of La Coruña in the early evening. Spend your day strolling the Spanish streets, taste tapas in La Coruña's Old Town, or visit the Tower of Hercules, an ancient site situated at the top of the cliffs, for a beautiful view. Then return to your ship, and bask in the fading sun on Queen Anne's deck with a cocktail, eclipse-glasses at the ready for prime viewing as you sail out of port. A perfect day.

Queen Victoria - Western Mediterranean (V616)

A favorite among our guests for her intimate, cozy spaces and warm charm, Queen Victoria will sail roundtrip from Civitavecchia (coastal gateway to Rome) for a two-week Mediterranean adventure. Explore sun-soaked Spanish and French ports, including Barcelona, where delicious tapas and colorful architecture await your senses.

Queen Victoria will dock in the ancient town of Tarragona, in Spain, on August 12. During the day, visit the Roman ruins of Tarraco, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and sit on the stone steps of the amphitheater, looking out at endless sea and sky. Walk into the town center to explore Spanish flavors, music and dance at Casa de la Festa. Or visit one of several nearby beaches for some space and a cooling dip in the Mediterranean Sea. Once back on board for the eclipse in the early evening, you can choose from many viewpoints Queen Victoria has to offer. With ample deck space, outdoor pools and deck bars, you can be comfortable and relaxed after your day of exploring on shore, as the moon and sun connect above you.

Lunar eclipse cruises

Solar eclipses are almost always preceeded or followed by a lunar eclipse, and 2026 is no exception, as August 28 will see a partial lunar eclipse. This is when the moon moves into the shadow of the Earth. Queen Anne will be sailing back to Southampton from visiting Cadiz in Spain, Queen Mary 2 will be sailing northwards to the Norwegian fjords, and Queen Victoria will be visiting Kotor in Montenegro - a true Mediterranean gem.

Winter cruises into the Arctic Circle give you the best chance to see the Northern Lights at Sea. Though sightings can never be guaranteed, our on board experts and special talks are sure to satiate your appetite while you wait for night to fall.

Visit Illuminations

Illuminations theater on Queen Mary 2 was the first of its kind at sea, and offers daily shows and talks - simply consult your Daily Program and pick when you'd like to visit. The venue also doubles up as a cinema, making it a popular venue during Transatlantic Crossing sea days.
