South Pacific: your questions answered

Our first recommendation is the island of Bora Bora, in French Polynesia. The perfect example of South Pacific beauty, this island features the verdant Mount Otemanu alongside crystal water and white sandy beaches. So long as you're by the water, keep your eyes peeled for manta rays gliding along.

Second is New Caledonia, specifically Noumea. This popular destination combines French cafes and boutiques with glorious sun and perfect Pacific beaches. The city's cluster of museums is perfectly positioned to introduce you to local history and culture, and the Aquarium des Lagons houses a variety of local marine life.

Last, but not least, is Lautoka, Fiji's second-largest city. Alongside the usual stunning beaches and waters, visitors can explore Lautoka Mill - the largest sugar mill in the southern hemisphere - as well as Shri Krishna Kaliya Temple. Sample rum and other liquors from the South Pacific Distilleries, and journey to Koroyanitu National Park to experience waterfalls and beautiful walking trails.

The South Pacific enjoys warm temperatures all year round, so keep this at the forefront of your wardrobe planning. Not only is it the ideal place for summer dresses and shorts, but the waters in this region are perfect for swimming and snorkelling, so make sure you don't miss out and pack several changes of swimwear. However, many of the local customs require you to cover knees and shoulders when you make port calls, so be sure to keep this in mind.

Also, pack comfortable shoes to explore the local sights, and choose sandals over flip flops: many of the beaches are rocky or coral beaches rather than sand. Finally, bring your sunscreen, hat and glasses for the long, sunny days.
