Astoria, Oregon , USA cruises

Charming Astoria, the oldest US city west of the Rocky Mountains, boasts a delightful collection of museums, forts, and Victorian architecture. It’s also the location of many Hollywood blockbusters.

This picturesque city was founded in 1811 on the Columbia River, near the Pacific Ocean. Its rich, colourful history is filled with the influences of people and cultures from around the world.

A good way to obtain a genuine feel for Astoria is to stroll along the Astoria Riverwalk. With stunning river views, you’ll pass under the 4.1-mile long Astoria-Megler Bridge and get a glimpse of the sea lions lounging on the docks at 36th Street. Alternatively, hop on the Astoria Riverfront Trolley, an original 1913 streetcar, and enjoy the sights on the 3-mile-long historic journey.

The iconic Astoria Column is one of the city’s proudest landmarks. At 125-feet tall, the tower sits on a hilltop 600 feet above sea level, offering spectacular panoramic views of the city, Columbia River, and Young’s Bay. Don’t forget to purchase a balsa-wood plane in the gift shop, which is traditionally launched when you reach the top.

Frequently used as a movie location, Astoria has sometimes been referred to as ‘Hollywood North’. Some of these classics films include Kindergarten Cop, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Free Willy, Short Circuit, and probably the most famous – The Goonies.
