Top Landmarks and Sights in Port Canaveral

Kennedy Space Center

A visit to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center always features highly on Port Canaveral to-do lists. Located just a short drive from the Port Canaveral cruise terminal, this world-famous launch site has facilitated many of NASA’s most high-profile missions into outer space, including the historic 1969 moon landings. Once inside you’ll have the opportunity to walk among rockets from NASA’s Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space programmes, access restricted areas on a Kennedy Space Center bus tour, and experience the sensations of blasting off in a realistic rocket simulator.

Wizard of Oz Museum

This quirky independent museum is a must-visit for fans of Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. Born out of one collector’s love of the movie, the museum now hosts the widest range of Wizard of Oz artifacts in America, including film props and costumes. It also offers an interactive exhibit that puts you directly into the heart of the action. Make your own journey along the Yellow Brick Road as sound and movement create the vivid sensation of being immersed into key scenes from this cinematic sensation that’s delighted audiences for decades.

Manatee Sanctuary Park

This ten-acre park, nestled on the banks of the Banana River, really makes the most of its waterfront location. As well as stretches of grasslands offering uninhibited river views, the park also plays home to a paved fitness trail, pavilion with kitchen, and a covered boardwalk. As the name suggests, it’s not only dogs and humans who enjoy spending time here. Manatees are also frequent visitors to this stretch of the river, most commonly in warmer seasons when the water temperatures are a little more to their liking. They can often be spotted feasting on the fresh sea grass that takes root near the park’s boardwalk, so take up residence here for your best shot at a sighting.

Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier

Built in 1962, the same year as NASA opened Kennedy Space Center, the 800-foot Cocoa Beach Pier has long been a popular spot to soak up the Floridian sunshine. Today it boasts a selection of shops, restaurants, and bars, as well as a long promenade stretching out across the Atlantic. Having undergone multiple refurbishments over the years, the pier continues to stand strong as one of the Space Coast’s most established landmarks. Cocoa Beach itself is a beautiful expanse of sand that attracts sunbathers and surfers in equal numbers. You can observe them in action from the pier, or even sign up to a lesson with one of the resident surf schools.

You’ve seen Port Canaveral by land and sea, so why not see it by air too? A helicopter tour isn’t only a great way to take in the sights, it’s also an incredible experience you don’t get to enjoy every day – one that’s sure to provide a memorable highlight of your holiday. Helicopter tours of Port Canaveral depart from Cocoa Beach. You’ll be piloted in air-conditioned comfort, usually in a group of no more than three people. Exactly which sights you’ll see boils down to conditions on the day and the flight itinerary you choose, but you could find yourself flying over the Kennedy Space Center or even your very own Cunard Queen. Don’t forget to give the captain a friendly wave if you do.

Kayak in the company of curious marine mammals

Port Canaveral’s position on the Florida coastline makes it an excellent spot for outdoor adventurers looking to get a closer look at some of the state’s natural scenery and wildlife. One of the best ways to experience both is by taking a daytime kayaking tour of the Thousand Islands. This unique Floridian ecosystem is a picture of lush green scenery, where tunnels of mangroves guide your path. The area is home to a wealth of winged and underwater inhabitants who are all too happy to make an appearance. Manatees, dolphins, herons, and ospreys are just some of the locals you might find yourself getting closely acquainted with.

Blue crab, lobster, hardshell clams, pompano, oysters, and mahi mahi are just some of the local favourites you’ll have the chance to wrap your lips around. Creamy, crumbly, and with a citrus tang that cuts through the richness, this deeply-loaded dessert is a quintessential taste of Florida you won’t want to miss.

The aforementioned freeze-dried ice-cream is of course from here.

Cocoa Beach, and Cocoa itself, is your best bet for independent shopping, in particular surf apparel, shells, art, and clothing. There’s also a shopping mall (centre to us Brits) in Cocoa Beach, with a wider range of American and international brands – perfect for the serious shopper. Around 30-minutes from port you’ll also find Avenue Viera, an open-air retail, dining, and entertainment complex, with a mix of clothing, lifestyle, and beauty brands.
