Getting around, Santorini transport

Santorini is a small island and easy to get around. Local buses run from most locations and car hire and bike hire are also widely available. Taxis can also be found across the island for those who wish to use them. 

The port is connected to the centre of Fira by cable car. Alternatively, you can drive or walk but the path is rocky and may be unsuitable for those scared of heights or with limited walking ability.

Many surrounding towns and villages can be reached by public transport link or private excursion and car hire.

The facilities at the port of Santorini include a duty-free shop, gift stalls, and free Wi-Fi. The cable car takes three minutes to reach the centre of Fira town where a wider variety of facilities are available.

Currency

The Euro is the local currency in Santorini and often the US Dollar is also accepted, however, the exchange rate is often poor. Card payments are widely accepted however there may be a foreign transaction fee. 

However, some small shops and bars may not accept card payments, so it is recommended you carry some cash during your visit. 

Tipping is not mandatory in Santorini but a small bonus for exceptional service is greatly appreciated. 

Weather

Santorini has a typical Mediterranean climate with warm summers and ample sunshine. 

On average, temperatures reach highs of 29°C during the summer in Santorini while winter months reach lows of 9°C. 

March to June and September to October is considered to be the best time to visit Santorini. During these months you will experience sunny and warm island weather and suitable weather for scuba diving, hiking, and outdoor exploring.
